background
Whilst writing the score for John Hughes’ latest (and in retrospect best) brat-pack film
The Breakfast Club, Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff penned
Don’t You (Forget About Me), intended for the film's opening credits. Recording a rough demo,
Forsey wanted it recorded by an established band and started to hawk both
the tape, and himself, around the record companies of bands he admired and felt could suitably record it and add
gravitas to the soundtrack.
Which is why Simple Minds found him in their dressing room after
one of the Tour De Monde gigs in America, clutching a collection
of Simple Minds bootlegs, and enthusing about this great song he’d written.
(After hearing the song A&M invited him backstage but neglected to tell
Simple Minds anything about it.) Bemused, and no doubt amused by the episode,
they declined.
Bryan Ferry also declined. As did Billy Idol, who
Forsey was successfully producing at the time.
Forsey was not one to give up and flew to the UK to persuade
Simple Minds again to record the track. He found them in London, working on the demos for
Once Upon A Time. With
Forsey on their backs, and A&M on their backs, the band relented,
thinking the song was just another incidental track to a forgettable brat-pack movie. They booked a studio in Wembley, and nailed the song
in three hours. One of the caveats was they could play with the arrangement, and
Jim added the “la la las” on the day.
The band carried on with Once Upon A Time and completely forgot about the song.
"Prior to the release of Don't You (Forget About Me), Simple Minds
had achieved a fair amount of critical success. However, there is little point denying that this is the song that
kicked the door to "the big league" wide open for us" - Jim
"...And so to this week, where we are soon to be making our way to the Nevada Desert,
and above all to that mecca of gambling and many other ritzy pastimes - Las Vegas. Lady Luck
certainly happened our way when producer Keith Forsey and movie director,
John Hughes came banging on our door in November ’84. The Breakfast Club
movie had recently finished shooting and they were adamant that they wanted Simple Minds
to record the main song for the soundtrack - Don’t You (Forget About Me). Plenty of others have claimed
that they wanted them too, but I don’t believe a word of it."
"In any case, the success of that song/movie fast-tracked Simple Minds
onto a level of success that may or may not not already have been coming our way. But it also alienated
some of our until then loyal followers who had perceived Simple Minds as, a cool
Euro thing only, and certainly not something to be splattered all over MTV. They were of
course entitled to their opinion. It is not my favourite Minds track either. But I don’t
have one to begin with! (For your info, Alive And Kicking - the
follow up to Don't You - reached No. 2 on the Billboard Charts)."
"I am however eternally grateful to be associated with a record that has given so much pleasure
to so many. Plus, it is always a blast to perform. Our gratitude will hopefully be evident when we
walk on at the MGM Grand in Vegas this coming Sunday. That apart I must admit that I also like the notion
of having sung on a record that once sat at the No. 1 position on the American Billboard Charts. Forgive the
victory lap, but come on! Not too many can say that!" - Jim, 11th May 2015
JL: One of my favourite movies of all time is The Breakfast Club. I absolutely love it, I think it's so clever. And I showed it to my daughter, she
loves it too. And, of course, that was your first big moment in America.
JK: Indeed, it was. I mean sometimes it's the most unlikeliest of places where you find a success. We never in our lives imagined that The Breakfast Club,
or indeed Don't You (Forget About Me) would come in. And I mean, for those who don't know, Simple Minds were knocking
on the door of the big league, had a few number one albums, were going into the arenas – and that was happening all around the world apart from the States. We tried,
we'd spent a lot of money going into debt to tour there and kind of thought "This is not happening." We weren't getting on radio basically.
JK: From out of the blue, this director called John Hughes, who went on to do The Breakfast Club, but had also done Pretty in Pink in
some of those other teenage American movies. He was a huge fan. I mean the movies were so American but he's a huge fan of British pop at the time: he loved
Echo And The Bunnymen, he loved The Teardrop Explodes, he loved OMD, he loved all that Liverpool stuff, he loved The Psychedelic Furs and
he sprinkled his movies with those kind of songs. For what was to become his next movie, The Breakfast Club, he was really hot in getting
Simple Minds. But it turns out that not only did he want Simple Minds he wanted Simple Minds to do this song that a producer he was
working with had written. And the pitch to us was "You should do it, it'll be really great, the American record company's really gonna give your album a push,
but you got to do this song, that sounds like Simple Minds."
JK: And we went "Hang on a minute. We are Simple Minds - we don't do songs that sound like Simple Minds. We are Simple Minds. We do our
own songs." We didn't fancy it at all, we didn't fancy the premise of the movie – it wasn't exactly The Godfather. We thought "no big deal." And we knocked it
back about five or six times. Within five of six months we were like "No, we're not doing it." We were working on our own stuff, the album that was about to become
Once Upon a Time work, we were working on
Alive And Kicking and stuff like that. We thought "We'll be fine without your song."
JK: The producer, in question, a guy called Keith Forsey, the co-writer of the song, he got in touch and said
"Look. I know you're not going to do it. Disappointed but I love the band. I love to work with you some point in the future. I'm going to be over there. Can I
come and see you?" And we said "Yeah, sure" because he had done some stuff we really liked. Anyway Keith comes over and
it's only for three days. It was just one of those things. And he's just a brilliant little guy, and we loved him instantly, full of enthusiasm, and he played
it brilliantly. He waited for the last day and said... and by this time we were best mates and I had been drunk about five times and all that stuff and he said
"Why don't you just do this track? It'll get the record company off your back. If it's rubbish, it's rubbish and you've got nothing to lose, and if it's good... who knows?"
And by this time a couple of guys in the band said "You know, I don't think the track's that bad." We never thought it was bad, we just didn't like the idea of
doing someone else's stuff. Anyway, smitten by Keith and his enthusiasm, we took an afternoon in the studio.
JK: The track as it was - it didn't resemble at all what came out in the end. Sure – the chorus and melody was there but it didn't have the whole intro, it
didn't have those brilliant lyrics that I wrote that go "La, la, la, la" and it just didn't have that big Simple Minds heartbeat. We just completely transformed
this thing. At the end of the day, we all kind of knew we'd created this thing that – we were all hoping everyone would go "It didn't work. That's it. Story's
finished." But, at the end of the day, or by the end of the afternoon, we knew that "Oh God, we're in trouble here" because this is the kind of thing that record
company's going to love, radio will probably like, MTV which had emerged – perfect for." All the things we started to
envisage came to be. Along with that came Live Aid and this number one success. None of it you could predict.
None of it. You can still see how I'm a bit hesitant – don't get me wrong, we're not hesitant when we play it live – but we play it with so much heart and soul,
because the song has given so much pleasure to people.
JK: It'll always be an outsider. It didn't come from inside us. But that's fine – especially when the royalty cheque comes through. [Laughs]

JK: But that took months before he responded. And we'd done this thing for an obscure movie soundtrack
called The Breakfast Club. We used to refer to it as "The Black Hit From Space" because it was like
"Where did that come from?" For those who don't know, we didn't write that song. We were cajoled into doing it.
JE: First of all... it went to Billy Idol and then Bryan Ferry.
CB: So they say. Maybe Billy...
JK: I have my doubts.
CB: I have my doubts as well.
JK: I tell you why I have my doubts. For an A&M movie they want an A&M act. And
neither of them were.
JE: That was quite the norm at the time for songs to be landed on bands, especially for movie soundtracks.
CB: At that particular time, I don't think it was. The reason we were always wary about doing
that in the first place, we couldn't understand why they'd want us to do somebody else's song. We were writing
our songs. So, it wasn't really quite working for us.
JE: So the song was written for the film then?
JK: It was.
CB: It was kind of like a real demo. When we did it, we really upped it to where it became.
JE: So nowadays your name would be above that door. You'd get a co-writer.
JK: To be honest, they offered us - and I don't know if Charlie
remembers this - but we're not going to take the geezer's dough.... How daft! [Laughs]
JE: And six weeks later it's "Oh my God!"
JK: Honestly, we were like "Nah!"
CB: I think the demo of it's great. The very original is really great.
JE: Has that ever been heard?
JK: I think the demo's well dodgy. It sounds like a Psychedelic Furs B-side. We gave the song
grace and stature, we came up with the most insightful "la la las"...
JE: So the "la la las" were yours?
JK: They're home grown! [Laughs] Made in Scotland. From girders.
JE: That changed everything. It was just crazy big. And it still is.
JK: We didn't see it coming.
CB: No, we didn't. We didn't put it on the album.

Hey, hey, hey ,hey
Ohhh...
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby.
Tell me your troubles and doubts,
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark,
Think of the tender things that we were working on,
Slow change may pull us apart,
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't you forget about me.
Don't, don't, don't, don't.
Don't you forget about me.
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me,
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling,
Down, down, down.
Will you recognise me?
Call my name or walk on by?
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling,
Down, down, down, down.
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ohhhh...
Don't you try to pretend,
It's my feeling we'll win in the end.
I won't harm you or touch your defenses,
Vanity and security.
Don't you forget about me,
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby.
Going to take you apart,
I'll put us back together at heart, baby.
Don't you forget about me.
Don't, don't, don't, don't.
Don't you forget about me.
As you walk on by,
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by,
Will you call my name?
When you walk away.
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on - call my name
Will you all my name?
I say : La la la...
