Street Fighting Years Tour

"After we'd finished the record we knew what would work on stage: by the time we did the Street Fighting Years tour all those songs fitted beautifully in to that set. We were definitely down the Celtic road – it was "this is who we are and we’re not ashamed of it." We'd avoided that before." - Mick - Street Fighting Years Super Deluxe


The rehearsals took place at The Point, Dublin, Ireland for three weeks before the tour. This included all the prep work for the equipment and culminated with full dress rehearsals. (The second day of the full rehearsals was on the 9th May 1989). The songs worked on were: Street Fighting Years, Wall Of Love, Mandela Day, This Is Your Land, Soul Crying Out, Waterfront, Ghostdancing, Book Of Brilliant Things, Don't You (Forget About Me), Gaelic Melody, Take A Step Back, Oh Jungleland, Big Sleep, Kick It In, Let It All Come Down, Belfast Child, Sanctify Yourself, Alive And Kicking, East At Easter, Sun City and Biko.

The rehearsals were recorded and can be recognised by the lack of audience reaction before and after the songs. (Lone roadies and support staff can be heard clapping and cheering after several tracks).

The "live" version of Big Sleep, which appeared on the Kick It In single, was taken from these rehearsal sessions.

"We played things like Celtic songs with a fiddle break in the middle and we were giving everything a shot. We opened our Wembley show with the title track of Street Fighting Years, which doesn't even really have any drums in it! It was a bit mad, but we had to play stadiums on our terms. The lively, colourful tour programme was written by the group's official biographer Alfred Bos and illustrated with live photography from Guido Harari and Andy Earl. The whole package was designed by Malcolm Garrett.





Rather nasty bootleg tour programmes were also readily available at the gigs.





Bruce Finday's Tour Itinerary for the British Tour in the summer. This included the dates from the 22nd June (Leeds) to the August 26th (London). It had a simple white cover with his name written on the front.





The AAA pass for the tour used the new Claddagh logo with a triangular Simple Minds enclosing it. This design was repeasted for all the other tour passes.





Smaller AAA passes were produced from laminated black-and-white paper photocopies.





Different coloured and shaped material passes for different access restrictions were issued for specific nights. Each had a password stamped on the front for specific gigs. This was a VIP pass for a representative of the record company.





Whilst this was the pass for an electrician from the working crew.

Glittering Prize 81/92

This concert was filmed and recorded. It was intended to use this recording for the live video but they eventually filmed the Verona concert instead.

It was also featured in an MTV Special where four Simple Minds fans from around the world were invited to the concert and to meet the band.

Footage from the show was used for the Kick It In video. Several years later Sanctify Yourself was released on the Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation. The rest remains unreleased.

"I'm a poor drinker... On my 30th birthday I'd had too much to drink and then had a horrendous night on stage. Not only physically horrendous, but the audience had paid good money and got - from me anyway - a shadow of a performance. It just wasn't on." - Jim. The band planned to tour America in October but the album had not sold well and so a gap was left in the schedule.

"We didn't do America. We wanted to focus on where the album was strong. We had plenty to focus on. I wasn't surprised at all that America didn’t get it - we think we knew that. Europe was our market, which was plainly obvious with the music we'd been making." - Charlie - Street Fighting Years Super Deluxe

"It was a world tour over a period of time, which mentally I'd budgeted for, and they cancelled the American leg of it. It left a massive hole in the timeframe to go and write a new record. It took us over a year to write Street Fighting Years - I was angry we weren't doing the best we could, with that what was on the table right now. Instead the trio of Jim, Charlie and Mick, along with Steve Lipson, relocated to a recording studio near Amsterdam to begin work on a new album. Some of the new recordings were quickly issued on The Amsterdam EP
