Once Upon A Time Tour

Late October will always standout within the story of Simple Minds.

For it was then in 1985 that our then latest album, Once Upon A Time, was released to the world.

The album itself was made available on the 21st and was set to do very well, following on that is from both the summer successes of Don't You (Forget About Me), itself then followed by the lead single from Once Upon A Time Alive and Kicking.

The radio appeal of both of those songs had sealed the deal commercially for Simple Minds - and especially now with the added power of MTV on board out train, Once Upon A Time was almost guaranteed to be on its way to achieving worldwide success.

Not that we had much time to dwell on that. For in only 10 more days (Halloween no less) we were due to kick off what was to be the start of 12 months touring. To prepare for that we had gone "upstate" from New York, finding ourselves in The Mid-Huston Civic Centre, Poughkeepsie. All done with the view of finishing off rehearsals and performing what hopefully would be a great opening gig, prior to heading back into New York - surely full of confidence - for a sold out show in front of the world's media in the famous Radio City Music Hall.

Heady times indeed!

In fact, beset with monitor sound problems, I recall having a "nightmare experience" throughout those opening gigs. (Well it was Halloween I guess?)

And worse was to follow, for those technical gremlins that made life miserable for us on stage, somehow continued further throughout those initial weeks of touring.

Utterly frustrated. The result being that while we should have been jumping up and down at the news of our album success - instead I felt depressed with the early live shows.

It was tough on all of us, when not long after we had to make the painful decision and part with some of our technical crew. Truth is, while we were growing and improving rapidly, not all round us were doing so at the same rate. An that is still the reality with Simple Minds. You either grow and inspire. Or guaranteed your phone stops ringing when it comes to the next set of dates. In any case, the audiences thankfully did not seem to notice our difficulties and welcomed us throughout the States. Plus, we had the newly great pleasure of having extra talent with us on stage. Sublime talent actually.

I am of course thinking about the firepower of both bassist John Giblin (or Goblin as Mel called him. Er... it was Halloween after all!) and, now legendary backing singer, Miss Robin Clark.

All was therefore not lost entirely, and more importantly we had some fantastic new songs to play. All of which you can hear on that album that will always be huge part of our story Once Upon A Time.

This colour 32 page tour programme was sold at the first gigs. It was bascially an art book, stuffed with Anton Corbijn photographs of the band around New York State.





This colour 40 page tour programme was sold during the second half of the tour. It was still an art book filled with Anton Corbijn photographs of the band around New York State, but there were additional shots of the band on stage.





A deluxe tour programme was produced for the Japanese gigs stuffed full of exclusive colour Guido Harari photographs.





This Italian bootleg tour programme was produced for the Reggio Emilia gig.





And a British bootleg tour programme was sold at the Ibrox and Milton Keyne Bowl gigs.





The Total Access pass for the tour reflected the simplistic graphic design of the album.





The other laminated pass design was even more simplistic. These were probably issued individually by the tour manager for sections of the tour.





Different laminated AAA passes were issued for the Australian leg of the tour.





Different coloured material passes for different access restrictions were issued for specific nights. Each would have the venue and date written on the front for specific gigs.





Only pink and blue versions have surfaced so far.





Promoters Regular Music handled the Ibrox concert (and possibly others). They produced their own range of custom passes which feature their large "R" logo along with the Simple Minds logo across the top in gold. This is the AAA pass.

"It was Halloween 1985 when Simple Minds first used a live percussionist. We had just released our Once Upon A Time album and rather nervously started our world tour in Poughkeepsie, New York. The highlights that night were vocalist Robin Clark and percussionist Sue Hadjopuolos, both making their debuts with Simple Minds. The rest of us were unfortunately a little under rehearsed. Both toured throughout the next year, featuring in more than 150 Simple Minds concerts worldwide. To this day we have great affection for them and feel honoured to have had their talent on stage with us. As is the way with everyone and anyone we have shared a stage with. The whole gig was recorded by Virgin. Only a handful of tracks have been officially released.

Part of this gig was found in Mick MacNeil's archive. His copy appeared to be the version mixed by Pete Walsh as his versions of Don't You (Forget About Me) and Street Hassle are identical with the released ones. Whilst parts of this gig were issued on various radio show transcription discs, some tracks turned up as B-sides, and a representative chunk turned up on Silver Box, the entire gig remains unreleased. Songs in Mick's archive such as Oh Jungleland, Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), The American and East At Easter have yet to be issued.

It's a good clean recording and documents Jim's battle with his voice - the outro of Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) includes the unique refrain of "My voice is knackered. My voice is gone."

In summer 1986 Simple Minds were overwhelmed to discover that we would play the magnificent antique Roman arena in Nimes. All that history was too much to take in, and completely fascinated by what was to be our concert venue in Nimes, we took the opportunity to visit the arena on the day before our show while the stage etc. was being set up.
