background
"We began to think we could work on the radio. The three singles from
Sons And Fascination had got somewhere between 40 and 60, and in those
days you needed to be in the Top 30 to get a slot on Top Of The Pops. ... No-one was doing conventional
pop songs. It was distilled from their own thing. So we thought, we really have to have a song like that. And Miracle
was what emerged. - Jim Kerr, Uncut Magazine, February 2013
"Our first real hit and this gave us a sense we were on our way." - Charlie, 24th March 2015
Derek recalled that the band decided they needed to have a hit.
Talking to Retropopic in 2018, he said "We got to a point where we said 'We're going to need a hit. We're going to have to get on Top Of The Pops.' And
then one night, in a place called West Runton Pavillion - it's near Newcastle - we said 'We need to write something. Is
there any way we can put a single out before we do an album?' And the manager said 'I don't see why not.' And that's
when Promised You A Miracle came in." Unfortunately the band didn't play the West Runton Pavillion during the first leg of
the Sons And Fascination tour, leaving the location and time of this
band decision slightly vague.
The inspiration for the new song came from new drummer Kenny Hyslop
later on the same tour.
He would record local radio stations on his walkman, especially those playing megamixes and the
new house music. Whilst in New York, he recorded a song which would inspire the band's next single. "I tuned into
this long megamix on Kiss FM and a track called 'Too Through' by
Bad Girls came on. I liked the sound of it so I pressed record and play, and quickly fell in love with it.
Eventually, halfway through the tour Jim asked 'What's that thing you keep
listening to on your Walkman?'" - Kenny Hyslop, Uncut Magazine, February 2013
The whole band were taken by it and started to play around with it during a rehersal session between legs of
the tour at Rockfield in January 1982. As Charlie remembered: "We decided to jam around this
thing. We loved the groove and a bit of the bassline, then Mick MacNeil and I
came up with this riff. It was put together without any great thought, it came together very easily, very quickly.
The writing couldn't have taken more than a couple of days." The middle-8 was written by
Derek: "So that was the wee bit that played from the F to Bb and Eb."
The lyrics also came very quickly. "It was very much instant. The phrase was there. I don't know why, it just came
as a response to the riff. I probably just snatched it from one of my notebooks and it just fitted in terms of
rhythm and seemed to go with the feel of the song" recalled Jim. "I wanted
it to be 'Promised You A Mackerel'", joked Derek. "We left
Jim to the words. He would recognise conversations we'd had, pick things up.
His lyrics were great at that point. He'd take the tapes away and sit up all night and write lyrics to it."
It looks like the band were only booked into Rockfield to use The Old Mill as rehearsal space as nothing was formally
recorded there. Instead they chose to formally demo the song during a Kid Jensen session
on the 11th February before formally recording the track at The Townhouse over the next couple of days
(the date on the multi-track is the 12th February 1982). Two stereo takes of the multi-track were mixed down on the
14th February 1982 with the second being selected as the master, before the band took the ferry that evening to
continue their Sons And Fascination tour.
So they used their next to formally demo
the song.
Just before setting off on the second leg of the Sons And Fascination tour in January 1982,
the band
were holed up at Rockfield Studios. Promised You A Miracle was
recorded in demo form, the idea to return to it when the recording
of the new album started, but they couldn't leave it alone, so it was polished up and recorded properly with
Pete Walsh in the producers' chair.
It was also recorded and released between albums to boost the band's popularity for the rest of the
Sons And Fascination tour. They were within touching distance of being able to
play bigger venues - and the single did the trick.
It was the only studio recording which featured Kenny Hyslop; he left the group shortly afterwards.
Jim felt it was the first song to express the band's full potential. They knew it would be a hit
the instant they recorded it.
Released as a single, Promised You A Miracle lead to the band's first UK Top-20 hit,
and their first appearance on Top Of The Pops (with Mike Ogletree now on drums).
Jim often would introduce the song with "A story of ambition, this is
Promised You A Miracle."
Derek Forbes overdubbed the bass parts on the live version released on
Live In The City Of Light.
"We had worked with a drummer then called Kenny Hyslop and he was standing in for
us. Kenny had worked with Slik and The Zones and he was a lot
older than us. He was the first guy I knew who was into New York music - I guess it was the early rap music, the early house,
the early R&B - and he came back from New York with a cassette of stuff that he'd taped. And one of these things - and we still don't
know what it was - but it was this great brass riff. Which we kind of uses as a basis for the riff on Promised You A Miracle. And, again,
when we'd written it, we thought this is the first pure pop-song we've written, and at the same time the ambience around -
ABC were coming up with pop,
Depeche Mode were coming up with pop,
The Associates were making this spooky pop, and we felt we
had the chance of having our first hit with Miracle. And, indeed, that was to be the case." - Jim, Sunday Herald interview, 2008.
"To write the lyric for "Promised You A Miracle" for example, I needed not much more than a short blast of
inspiration to find some words that could act in summing up perfectly the positive feel of the music. In addition
I needed a melody to dance around the structure. Having grown up fascinated with pop music, studying it all
the time - unaware as I did - as a kid with imagination, meant I was automatically equipped to write "Miracle" and many other
lyrics of a similar nature. More than anything what I needed there and then as I attempted to write ourf
irst bona-fide hit song, was to discover something that would strike clearly and was obviously catchy enough
to lodge in the brain of any casual listeners who came across it on radio. I am not too modest to say that a
good job was done, and that was the same overall opinion from most people around us who after their first
hearing usually smiled and said "It’s a hit!"" - Jim, simpleminds.com, 17th January 2010
The song was recorded by Jim and Martha Wainwright in 2010 as part of
an Oxfam promotional campaign to highlight broken government promises. It
was the first song produced by Andy Wright and led to him working on Big Music,
Acoustic and Walk Between Worlds.

Promised you a miracle.
Belief is a beauty thing.
Promises promises,
As golden days break wondering.
Chance as love takes a train.
Summer breeze and brilliant light.
Only love she sees,
He controls on love,
Love sails to a new life.
Promised you a miracle.
Belief is a beauty thing.
Promises promises,
As golden days break wondering.
Only love she sees.
He controls on love.
Life mirrors a cure.
Everything is possible,
With promises.
Everything is possible.
Oh no.
I promised you a miracle.
Belief is a beauty thing.
Promises promises,
As golden days break wondering.
Chance reflects on them a while,
Love screams so quietly.
Slipping back on golden times,
Breathing with sweet memories.
Promised you a miracle.
Belief is a beauty thing.
Promises promises,
As golden days break wondering.
Only love she sees.
He controls on love.
Life mirrors a cure.
Everything is possible in the game of life.
Everything is possible.
Oh no.
Chance lost pearls of great price,
Take care of family,
Only aches for love,
Love waits for fame,
In chance, in chance, they'll see.
I promised you a miracle.
Belief is a beauty thing.
Promises promises,
As golden days break wondering.
Only love she sees.
He controls on love.
Life throws a cure.
Everything is possible in the game of life,
A burning dream.
You can be Queen.
Everything is possible
