"How did they become so good? No matter what walk of life or profession - that's a question I find myself asking whenever I reflect on the talents and skills of people who I admire. Drummer percussionist Cherisse Osei has an impressive story to tell about how she started out with her drumming obsession at a very early age. Although still at primary school she was already haranguing her parents and teachers to allow her to practice whenever and wherever possible. Eventually school gave permission for her to use its facility, meaning that Cherisse could go into school each morning for a couple of hours before normal school lessons began - working up a sweat as she played along to her favourite records, studying the various styles used by all her favourite drummers. Already absolutely dedicated even while so young, looking back now it's easy to imagine that she had indeed started out on a path that has led to her recently being voted (by her drumming peers) as among the world's best. These days whenever not on tour or recording - and bringing the roof down with Simple Minds live - as you will see in Zurich tonight - Cherisse spends time teaching others who are interested in playing drums. Meanwhile her dedication continues in a way that many, including me, find unimaginable. An example? In the weeks leading up to the current tour, Cherisse revealed in a recent Simple Minds Q+A - that she prepared by getting behind her drum kit and playing for 7 hours each day. Think about that for a minute? SHE PLAYED DRUMS FOR SEVEN HOURS A DAY. EVERY DAY! That level of dedication is normally associated with Olympic athletes, and it's probably why many now look on her as being a 'the champion behind the kit'. Take a bow Cherisse!" - Jim, 14th May 2022

"After a rare couple of nights off, both band and crew were feeling recharged and happy to be back on stage last night in Zurich. (Thanks to all who saw Simple Minds at The Hallenstadion.) Now into the seventh week of touring, given the energy transmitted each show, I can understand people supposing that we would be feeling quite "knackered" by now. Friends and family have certainly been enquiring - none of us are as young as we used to be after all! Strangely though, the more the tour continues, in many ways you become stronger and fitter. Definitely more so than at the beginning, and especially so after such a long period of previous touring inactivity. That's how I'm feeling at least... I'm not the only one. Plus, let's be honest. We are more than well looked after while out on our travels. In many ways I'd even say we are spoiled. Or at least we would be if we were to take things for granted. "Recently asked at a Simple Minds Q+A. "What is your favourite moment of any gig?" Almost all of us answered with a similar response - perhaps unsurprisingly saying that the excitement of walking on stage, meeting the audience and kickstarting the show by playing the first song of the night was the peak adrenaline moment. Therefore a true highlight among many wondrous experiences while on tour. Without aiming to be contrary, the response that came from 'yours truly' was the exception. For although I also feel that adrenaline surge as the lights go down and the intro music signals the start of the show. For me it's probable that the moment to savour most with every show comes at the very end of the night. Reason being it is at that point that I get to look out into the arena/hall and see proof of the results of our night's work. Usually that comes in the shape of the smiles written all over the faces of those who have spent the previous two and half hours getting lost in the concert as the setlist unfolds - singing and waving their arms, letting themselves loose almost in celebratory fashion as we hit the eventual climax and crescendo of each night's performance. Although we could be forgiven for allowing a feeling of pride to takeover at that point - the emotion I feel most is one of relief mixed with gratefulness. "Sarah Brown is 'a singer.' What an understatement that is! So good, I swear I could listen to Sarah sing every single day. How lucky then for me that I do actually get to hear her sing most nights, even more that I get to sing with her, as memerised in the process now as I was a whole 12 years ago when she first stepped on a stage in Copenhagen with Simple Minds. Recalling now the next day's review from that show declaring "Sarah Brown made a surprising and very confident debut with Simple Minds last night in Copenhagen. "Rain, hail, or shine. There's definitely something unique about playing music out in the open air. Think about it? Performing indoors e.g. theatres and arenas, we get to take over the venue completely. After all it's usually only our name on the ticket for that evening, meaning that by bring in our own sound and light equipment - and of course filling the room with nothing but our music - we get to determine the atmosphere from the moment the doors open until the lights go up and people start to make their way home."

"That memoir became one of the world's first ever travel books, and unlike some of my teenage colleagues who were in awe with science fiction writing, from a young age I always seemed to be more drawn to travel literature."

"It was through reading that I could travel in my mind. Absorbing stories and experiences from those talented enough to paint pictures with words, I still like to listen to people's travel stories, and we all have them."

"Longtime friend and fan of Simple Minds, Antonio Chemi, tells a nice story about travelling all the way from Sicily to Rome, in February 1986. Not yet 16 and already passionate about Simple Minds' music, Antonio harangued his parents for approval to attend Simple Minds' (now legendary) gigs at Paleaur, in Rome."

"Chemi's (over protective) father, Giovanni, although initially negative with regards to the idea of his son travelling alone from a small provincial town to the big city, finally relented after observing just how much the chance to see Simple Minds meant to his son."

"There would be one catch however? Antonio would only be allowed to make the 750 km train journey on the condition that Giovanni - who had no interest in Simple Minds, or any kind of rock music whatsoever - accompanied him to the concert, and would remain next to him throughout with a watchful eye."

"Although not exactly what Antonio had in mind, from that scenario a beautiful tale begins. A tale best told by Antonio as he reminisces still excited today at the memory of coming across other other young Sicilians en route to Rome by train to see Simple Minds."

"Who doesn't want to look 'fresh' after all, and youthfulness certainly has many great things going for it. But, perhaps through being blessed with good health so far, I have had not much problem at all with the realities of ageing - or for that matter the acceptance of myself creeping closer to oblivion. "Out on tour at the moment, I believe I am the oldest of all involved. That includes band and crew. Again no problem with that realisation. The eldest child, I was always defined as being the 'big brother.' From my earliest childhood memories I can recall being informed that it was my job "to sort things out." Sort things out for who? For those younger than me possibly? Later on I took it on myself to sort things out for my family, friends, my band. I didn't always succeed, but I usually always gave it my best shot. Still do."

"Way back during those first few years when we first started touring, I occasionally would send letters and postcards back home to friends and family."

"Quaint thing to do now, archaic even. But decades before anyone had heard of either the internet or mobile phones and well before anyone could imagine that such things would come into existence within our lifetimes, that was the only way we could communicate with people elsewhere in the world once we had set out on tour for months on end."

"Of course public telephones were available. But international telephone calls back then were so expensive and way beyond our financial means. I am therefore not exaggerating in saying that the only time you would think about calling home while on tour back then was in the event of some mini emergency occurring."

"And that's just the way it was then. To go on tour felt somewhat like sailors setting off to sea. Who knew what lay in front of us? And who knew what would happen in the lives of those we cared about back home as we wandered through cities and towns bearing names of places only slightly familiar to us while studying geography at school."

"All very exciting to experience nonetheless. More so when you felt as though you were experiencing it as part of a group of friends. And that is how you genuinely perceived those along for the ride, your bandmates and crew members. They were your closest friends! Even if they'd get on your nerves from time to time, then again, living so close and spending endless days and nights cooped up together, that was surely to be expected."

"And now? Things are very different. Technology means that in one way or another you (anyone) can almost remain in contact with anyone else in any part of the world - and at not too much expense. No more does it mean we feel cut adrift from events going on elsewhere as we eat up the miles careering forward in our 'bubble' - playing show after show in country after country."

"One thing does not change though."

"And it is that feeling of friendship that still comes from the strong bonds forged while touring. Not only do we rely on each other to get through the day (and the shows) in the best way we can. Nevertheless, what an experience we've had over these last couple of weeks performing in Spain. "How could I ever forget the feeling of excitement I witnessed when taken to Parkhead for my first ever football match all those years ago this past week. A mere 7 year old, I can also recall being informed that the then 'world's greatest player' would feature in that afternoon’s game. His name was 'George Best' and I was told that despite playing in the famous red shirt of Manchester United, he had originated from a place in Northern Ireland - not so far from where my own great-grandfather came from, and that it was called BELFAST."

"That I believe may well have been the first time I had ever heard of that city - a place that will always have a special significance within the still on-going story of Simple Minds."

"Decades later, today I find myself thinking of the genius of Best, but also recalling some of the 'best nights' of our lives when Simple Minds first came over by boat from Scotland to play in Belfast City Hall, during those very early years of our career. And how great it was to mark the occasion by performing two nights in beautiful Princess Street Gardens, in front of thousands of fans, friends, and family."

"As many will already know, the final show was unique among the other 79 shows played previously."

"The uniqueness being that the show itself was a benefit concert with proceeds going to UNICEF/UKRAINE campaign to aid refugees and innocent victims of the current on-going violence in that part of the world."

All shows were cancelled as a mark of respect after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
