simple minds #10

Derek, Jim, Mike, Mick and Charlie.

line-up:
vocals: Jim Kerr
guitar/violin: Charlie Burchill
keyboards: Mick MacNeil
bass: Derek Forbes
drums: Mike Ogletree

background:
After recording Promised You A Miracle, Kenny Hyslop left the band, and Simple Minds were left requiring a drummer for the second leg of the Sons And Fascination tour.

Bruce came up with a replacement, remembering Mike Ogletree from Cafe Jacques (who he'd also managed).

Mike was instantly thrown in at the deep end, taking on the European leg of the Sons And Fascination tour. His light percussive style was at odds with the steady and measured power of Brian and Kenny, which caused the group some problems when it came to recording New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84). Producer Pete Walsh brought Mel Gaynor into the sessions to give the drumming more power, and Mike's contributions were limited to Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel, Somebody Up There Likes You and New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) and Soundtrack For Every Heaven (which was inspired by one of his complex drumming rhythms).

As the New Gold Tour started, it became apparent that Mike couldn't adapt to the touring schedule. He was replaced by Mel Gaynor when the tour continued in the UK.

Mike Ogletree found the touring tiring and didn't have the drumming power the band required. Therefore he was replaced by Mel Gaynor when the UK leg of the tour started.
