Promised You A Miracle [Edit] (3:59)

Studio performance/Storyline

comments
If the basis of the Love Song video looked like it was suggested by a five year old, then the Promised You A Miracle video treated the band like a group of surly toddlers: assorted band members were allowed to help themselves to instruments in the music box, whilst Jim was sent outside to play in the sand pit.

I'm sure the director had great ideas and probably envisioned the band in a tropical location whilst Jim contented himself with a blonde lovely on a sun drenched beach. However, when Virgin's budget didn't quite touch that of Duran Duran's, all and sundry had to make to with a dodgy film stage in suburban rainy Britain.

However, if there was ever an idea behind the video, then it was completely lost by the time the shoot was completed. Part performance (with Derek on drums, Charlie on an clarinet and Mick making great use of the xylophone) and part story (with one of the girls from the Love Song video taking a plane to a tropical destination somewhere), it was shot against blue screen and, erm, left mostly blue screen.

And Jim stripped to the waist and writhed on a pile of sand. For some reason.

Honestly, I'm at a complete loss.

trivia
There is a copy of this video in the Universal Archive which is marked Do Not Use and originates from A&M. This may be a different edit of the video for US audiences or simply an old NTSC version.

Kenny Hyslop had just left the band and Mike Ogleetree was about to join. Therefore Derek Forbes picked up the sticks for the video as he used to have a drum kit.

Derek on drums?

Overexposed?

Jim on a beach?

Mick on xylophone?

Jim in the sand?

Love takes a plane?

It's really all too much.
