Sons And Fascination Tour 1982

After recording and releasing Promised You A Miracle, and picking up new drummer Mike Ogletree, the band played a Sons And Fascination centred set-list around the heartlands of Europe.

They then returned to the studio to start work on New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) but ventured out at weekends to play at European festivals and one-off gigs. Gradually more songs started to join Promised You A Miracle on the set-list, including King Is White And In The Crowd, Someone Somewhere In (Summertime), an instrumental version of New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) and even Somebody Up There Likes You (used as taped opener at the Hacienda gig).

One of the band's trucks crashed on the way to this gig, rolling into a Belgian field and bursting into flames. Johnny Ramsey (sound) and Steve Pollard (lights) escaped the blaze by kicking out the front windscreen.

Both refused to be seen by a doctor until the band's equipment was resuced from the flames and put on other trucks.

"Our first open air festival appearance that I can recall was little more than a year later and took place in Germany. Albeit 10 miles from the Dutch Border. Sharing the bill with Frank Zappa and The Stray Cats, Schuttorf Open Air on 5th of June 1982, was surely the first time we had felt the experience of working on a bigger stage, while playing in a sun drenched field front of thousands. Three things spring to mind whenever I think about that performance: 1. The weather was truly glorious. A rare thing for Simple Minds whenever it comes to playing outside. Our T-In-The-Park appearance being the worst in terms of playing throughout the most miserable of downpours. 2. A crowd of nude sunbathers had settled in on the river bank just to my stage left. Obviously that got our attention. After all no one nude sun bathes in Glasgow. 3. Once again we seemed to go over so well with a festival audience - most of whom would most likely never have heard of us prior. Leaving us to quickly come to the conclusion that Simple Minds could grow an audience much quicker through playing festivals. All of that was of course so long ago, but little has changed since then." - Jim, 22nd June 2017

Promised You A Miracle was released in 2022 on Live At WOMAD 1982 as part of the festival's 40th anniversary celebration. At the start of the track, Jim says "First of two new songs. The first one's called Promised You A Miracle".
