background
"I don't know if I ever mentioned this, but Bill Graham, the Hot Press journalist, was some kind of seer. He certainly had a very
big brain, and he certainly did U2 a favour when he pointed us in the direction of Paul McGuinness and said 'This should be your manager.'"
"When we could just about get into wine bars and underground cellars age 18 (sort of!) and met Bill after he'd been surfing some burgundy,
he would get very excited and repeat "81-82-83-84" into my ears... I thought he was suggesting that U2 would eventually get there during
those years. What I didn't realize is he was hallucinating a hook for a Simple Minds song that would prove germane to U2's evolution
from a rock band into something much more ecstatic. Without the album, NEW GOLD DREAM, I don't
believe there would have been an UNFORGETTABLE FIRE or a JOSHUA TREE... Charlie and
Mick, you accessed this ecstatic music and Jim had the poetry
to paint the picture."

New Gold Dream
Burning bridge and ecstasy, crashing beasts and fantasy
"You promised us a miracle, and they're all around us. Thank you. See you with SOMEONE SOMEWHERE IN SUMMERTIME."

The song was first called Festival Riff and developed during writing sessions at Fife in 1982. Parts were similar to
The Velvet Underground's What Goes On and Kraftwerk's Autobahn. According to
Derek, the first riff in the song, the repeated keyboard melody, was an accordion part developed
by Mick MacNeil.
"We nailed New Gold Dream right away. Derek was playing this really fast pumping bass and it
meant nothing, and just before that I'd been doing this guitar riff thing and it meant nothing either. Then by accident we put the two together
and Jim went off his nut, he went 'Yeeees! Fucking brilliant' Then we just went for it right away." - Charlie.
"It was like a festival - we pictured it as being something like Kraftwerk, motorway music. Up in Fife, once we got a cassette
version of it, we recorded it onto the audio channel of a video cassette of Jean-Michel Jarre in China, and it was great
watching him do his concerts in China with Festival Riff coming out." - Pete Walsh.
"Little known fact... lyrics to New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) were written in Orebro, Sweden in
August '82."- Jim, 14th March 2015
When it came to recording the song, Mike Ogletree and
Mel Gaynor recorded their drum parts simultaneously in The Townhouse at
four o'clock in the morning.
"On New Gold Dream
it's both of them. I was in there on bass to play along with them. The two of them were facing each other with
a kit each in the live room - and I was in the live room with them. So the three of us were there. They were
looking at each other - the two of them. They both had a drum machine as well - and then there was percussion
after that. So you've got two full drum kits and two drummers playing at the same time, the drum machine and
then a lot of percussion to top it. So it was just monster. If you imagine that sound - and I was doing
my tank division bass." - Derek, Retropopic 2018
The final song lasted ten minutes. Pete Walsh edited it down to produce the extended mix and
album mix. More of the orginal track can be heard on the DVD-Audio version of the album.
The dates were added at the last moment. "After an album obsessed by fear we'd made an album looking to the future. In spite of everything.
That explains the years to come. Also, 1984 was taboo. New Gold Dream went against that. It said: let's hear the news, good or bad" - Jim.
"For many, the New Gold Dream album remains our finest work. The song
and the album certainly mark the point where artistically, everything fell into place" - Jim
"We were struggling. We had the backing track. One of the big influences on us was a genre music called Kraut Rock - it's not
one of the most flattering terms - it was essentially these German garage bands namely
Neu, Can and another called La Dusselldorf, and basically they'd hit on a chord and repeat it and repeat it -
until you actually felt the thing was moving. And New Gold Dream was an exercise in that. Again the lyrics were coming from this
idea - I suppose we felt there was some sort of alchemy going on in our band and we felt we'd used our influences and with
our influences we'd cooked up something of our own. And I think New Gold Dream is about that - and the title track itself is also
in a way about that." - Jim, Sunday Herald interview, 2008.
"I remember recording the original at The Townhouse Studios in London’s Shepherd Bush. I was in the room with my bass
all fired up and Mel Gaynor and
Mike Ogletree were facing each other on two drum kits. We had a
guide track to play to, the light turned red and we started. It was like an aeroplane taking off - a wondrous cacophony of
magical rhythms and bad ass bass."

New gold dream,
She is the one in front of me, the siren and the ecstasy.
New gold dream,
Crashing beats and fantasy, setting sun in front of me.
New gold dream,
And the world goes hot,
And the cities take,
And the beat goes crashing,
All along the way.
She is your friend until the ocean breaks.
And when you dream, dream in the dream with me,
And when you dream, dream in the dream with me.
81 - 82 - 83 - 84.
81 - 82 - 83 - 84.
New gold dream,
Sun is set in front of me, worldwide on the widest screen.
New gold dream,
Burning bridge and ecstasy, crashing beats and fantasy.
Dream in the dream with me.
And the world goes hot,
And the cities take,
And the beat goes crashing,
All along the way.
She is your only friend until the ocean breaks.
And when you dream, dream in the dream with me,
And when we dream, dream in the dream with me,
81 - 82 - 83 - 84.
81 - 82 - 83 - 84.
New gold dream,
The siren and the ecstasy, she's the one in front of me.
New gold dream...
