additional information
The newly reformed Simple Minds of 1997 (with
Derek and Mel returning
to the fold) featured a rejuvenated set-list which recovered some previously forgotten gems from the back catalogue.
So I Travel and Thirty Frames A Second
made welcome returns, rubbing shoulders with the staple Simple Minds fare, along with the yet-to-be-released
Glitterball and War Babies.
The two new tracks were being premiered to gauge audience reaction after the top-brass at Chrysalis
questioned the material. The audience give both songs a resolute thumbs-up.
More News From This World was the only bootleg to emerge from this short festival tour. Recorded at
Loreley (which was also filmed and broadcast), the crowd-heavy audience recording is sometimes drowned by shouts
and screams but the band eventually emerge through the noise (although the mix is a little unbalanced at times).
An important bootleg it documents one of the first public performances of War Babies
(which is slightly different from the eventual album version), unique lyrics in
I Travel and the Neapolis-style
version of Alive And Kicking. Don’t let the minimal
Live In The City Of Light artwork put you off.
Recommended.
