background
Summer was first mentioned
as a possible track for
the second Lostboy! album.
"Summer I recall less about - it was simply an idea with big
energetic appeal for me. But I wanted to give you a more upbeat number. We demoed the vocal to
Summer and
Sense Of Discovery on the same day in the West End. A good day
that was!" - Owen Parker, February 2018
"Good flight to London with Charlie, both looking forward to the coming
Simple Minds gigs. Went to the studio near Oxford Street to demo two new Lostboy! AKA songs - music of both written by
Owen Parker. (Owen composed the music to
The Wait Parts 1+2,
She Fell In Love With Silence and
Broken Glass Park). I liked how these new
ones shaped up. "Summer" could be good. Sense Of Discovery will
be beautiful!" - Jim 1st June 2010
Even though he had the title back in 2010, it was the events at
the Bergen Festival in Norway
on the 13th June 2014 which inspired Jim to write the lyrics.
It was eventually recorded by Simple Minds and released on
Walk Between Worlds.
PP: "I think Summer is my pick
of best on the album. Ironically for something titled Summer, it's dark and driving. But it immediately caught my attention.
I don't know what you call a single anymore but this should be the single."
JK: "In the old days, people would've said "That's a hit single." God knows what that is now. It's certainly
catchy enough and uplifting enough. A couple of years ago we were up north, way up in Scandinavia, in the peak of the
midnight sun, which was unreal. We were playing festivals, going on after midnight, where there was still daylight.
Up there is a place called Bergen, and the whole town was hyped up, they were going into the countryside to
lose themselves for a few days and people were ecstatic. Not going on until midnight I was sitting in a hotel
room thinking "Maybe I'll do some work here." We had the track, it's a very uplifting track and I guess I was influenced
by the feeling around me. And I thought, "I'm going to try and write one of the ultimate summer songs." Although the
Isley Brothers might have the edge on that. But it's got all that imagery. I'm glad it made that impression on you."

SL: One of those things which struck me as well – just quickly going back to what's in the lyrics – you're
doing what you do quite well which is expressing a feeling. Summer
gives you that impression that Jim Kerr wakes up in the morning, jumps
out of bed and says "I love being alive." And I'd imagine that you do do that. [Laughs]
JK: Well I'll tell you the good thing about that. And this is a thing – when I played it to our manager Ian,
he got so excited he said "Ah, Summer... bummer" and I said "What do you mean?" and he goes
"The words. Here comes summer. That's good. Here comes rain. You can't... what...? Here comes summer. Here comes rain.
Can't we..." And I said "Jim Morrison would've said that." You've got to throw the shadows in there.
You can't just go "Summer!" There's got to be a feeling of lightness coming or thunder clouds are somewhere
there. And then you're on to something.

In the case of Summer, we were on
a summer festival tour and it was near the start. It was up in
Scandinavia. It was right in the middle of that twenty-four hour daylight - when you're sitting there at midnight and
it's still daylight. There was a great vibe in the town, because the festival was going on. Everyone was leaving to go
into the fields. We weren't going on until about two o'clock in the morning - which was still daylight. So there was something
"Otherworldly" about it; estatic about it as well. And the tune I was working on seemed to have that in it.

He explains how the track Summer was written after the band played a festival in Norway
and was partly inspired by Debbie Harry of Blondie.
Kerr says: "I know Debbie and have met her a few times.
"At the festival, Blondie were playing before us and we went to see them. But we didn't get a chance to speak.
"Later, I went back to work on this song and I was sat on my hotel balcony.
"On the far side of the hotel, I could see Debbie Harry sitting with her back to me. So, when I think of the song,
I think of that night and capturing a moment.
"When I checked out the next day, the receptionist said, 'Miss Harry has left you something.'
And she'd left me a packet of Haribo bears. It was great and she’s so great."

AW: "I always felt Summer would make a great single –In some way it’s more than the sum of it’s parts as the
verse and chorus are different versions of the same part. The excitement comes entirely from the dynamics – which turn
it into a very complete song. It was one of the first songs to really fire, and had a great sound right from the off, so it
was an important piece for us."

The song was remixed by Gary Numan and Ade Fenton and released as a single on the 4th May, after being exclusively
played by Steve Lamaqc on his Roundtable show the previous day. An album edit of the song was digitally
released on the 18th May.

Here comes summer, here comes rain
Here comes all those mysteries, make me born again
Here comes lightening now, I like the way it shoots
Here comes all those mysteries taking me to my roots
And when the sun rises again, into the fields, I wake up
Into my dreams I descend, where it’s all so real
Here comes summer, here comes rain
Here comes all those energies making me born again
Here comes lightening, I like the way it shoots
Here comes all those fantasies taking me to my roots
Here comes summer, here comes light
Here comes all those fantasies taking me through the night
Here comes summer coming, here comes heat
Here comes that strange power, taking me to my feet
And when the sun rises again, into the fields, I wake up
With no more dreams I descend, where it’s all so real
Here comes summer, here comes rain
Here comes all those energies making me born again
Here comes lightening, I like the way it shoots
Here comes all those fantasies taking me to my roots
All those bodies, all those bodies move around
Oh all those bodies everywhere
Here comes summer, here comes rain
Here comes all those energies making me born again
Here comes lightening, I like the way it shoots
Here comes all those fantasies taking me to my roots
