background
The song was formally demoed during the first Real Life writing sessions at Wisseloord in December 1989. The structure, tempo and instrumentation were still being determined as the band worked on two different versions. The Fast demo featured a cranked-up drum machine and Charlie picking out the melody on a steel guitar, Jim's rough repeating vocals featuring snatches of the final version and Jim's directing changes as Charlie switched between verses, chorus and the coda. The much slower version, called the Sex demo, was half the speed, had different drum rhythms, guitars and more prominent keyboards, with more developed, breathless vocals and a (mostly) pre-agreed song structure - that is until it suddenly stopped.

An Instrumental version was also recorded. This was based on the Slow version with piano, keyboard, drum machine and bass. The piano melody was much more developed and refined than the Fast and Sex versions suggesting it was recorded later that December as the song's structure came together.

Despite turning up on several compilation demo cassettes, Tears Of A Guy wasn't take further (it was never recorded during the Real Life sessions) and was temporarily shelved. The inclusion of two different versions on the demo tapes suggested there was still a big question mark over the song's structure and tempo, and so this wasn't its time yet.

In 1992, Charlie started working on new ideas for what would eventually become Good News From The Next World. Based in his own home recording studio at Killiney in Ireland, he produced compilation tapes of various songs, which included several reworked Real Life demos. Tears Of A Guy was now stripped down and rebuilt, with a bouncy, vibrant, bright rhythm and new instrumentation and structure. Again, it wasn't considered for the album's sessions during 1993, and Charlie revisited the song in Dublin in 1994, slowing it slightly, adding more guitar ideas with more euphoric keybords. Despite this makeover, Tears Of A Guy was still untouched during the final recording sessions, and was put back into the library.

The song was left untouched for a couple of years until Charlie unearthed it at the start of the Neapolis period. Unlike many of the Neapolis ideas and demos, which were written on primitive sounding keyboards with complex and multi-textural drum rhythms, he returned to his Killiney demo from 1992, overdubbing extra guitars and a slow, substained keyboard-based dronish coda. The gradual evolution of Tears Of A Guy from its Good News From The Next World guitar-based version into its final Neapolis guise had begun.

lyrics: tears of a guy
Fast Wisseloord Demo: Repeated Vocals

Just like a lone child, lost in the wild.
A bird that's lost at sea.
Take the long journey in your head,
Where you want to be.
Just like a lone child in your head,
Tomorrow's never came.
Just like a lone child in your head,
Tomorrow's never came.

The tears of a guy,
All you'll ever see.
Rain down the tears of a guy,
Tomorrow never be.

(Repeat and ad-lib)

Sex Wisseloord Demo

A lone child in the wild.
A sailor that's lost at sea.
Take a look at the long hope in your eyes,
Tomorrow's what you'll be.
Walking along the wrong road, I don't know,
Where we're coming from.
Look at the long road in your eyes,
Tell me where this's come from.

The tears of a guy,
Is all I'll ever see.
Tears of a guy,
The rivers run to me.

I get so cold.
Where you're not around.
Tell it to the lone child,
I can't feel it.

The tears of a guy,
Is all I'll ever see.
The tears of a guy,
So many rivers run to me.

Maybe tomorrow?

(Repeat and ad-lib)
