long black train

composer
Written by: Richard Hawley

background
Jim discovered this wonderfully moving lament, from Richard Hawley's 2001 album Late Night Final, when it cropped up on an Alan Yentob BBC documentary about Man Booker Prize winner Richard Flanagan, whose brutal novel The Narrow Road To The Deep North chronicled the experiences of Allied POWs working on the Thailand-Burma Railway in WWII.

An acoustic version was recored by the band in June 2016 and it appeared on their Acoustic album later that year.

A CHRISTMAS SONG

Write a Christmas themed song? It's a thought that has never entered. Why not? Well, although we have written hundreds of songs, and although it does happen, it is still rare that we aim to write so specifically.

Long Black Train - written by Richard Hawley - is not a Christmas song. Yet I recall while recording, how despite the fact that outside the city was bang in the middle of a summer heatwave. Within those studio walls however, there was something in the sound coming out the speakers that most definitely conjured up the feeling of Christmas.

No doubt the lyrics of the first verse, complete with images of the nightingale, the robin, the toll of the bell, and the city's shining lights etc had much to do with that.

Christmas or not? It is a very beautiful song!

lyrics
When the nightingale sings in the deep of the night,
And the robin he sleeps on the wing.
Hear the toll of the bell ringing out all is well,
And the city's golden lights shining on.
Ride the long black train.
Ride the long black train.
It takes us all the black train Take me home black train.

Ride the long black train.
Ride the long black train.
It takes us all the black train.
Take me home black train.

And the shadows we pass turns my soul into glass,
And the streets that I walk are all tamed.
Hear the toll of the bell ringing out all is well,
And the city's golden lights shining on.
Ride the long black train.
Ride the long black train.
It takes us all the black train.
Take me home black train.

And the briar and the rose in the churchyard they grow,
'Neath the clock tower tall all entwined.
And the raven he flies round the oak as she sighs,
And the candles they call out my name.
To ride the long black train.
Ride the long black train.
It takes us all the black train.
Take me home black train.
