background:
With the departure of Tony Donald, Simple Minds had to find a bass player fast.
If that was not enough for the fledgling band, Brian McGee was asked to play for
The Subs (another Glaswegian punk band) after their drummer (Ali MacKenzie) quit.
However, The Subs broke up a week later, so Brian didn't have to make any decision.
Jim and
Charlie had admired The Subs' bass player,
Derek Forbes, so asked if he wanted to join.
Derek was initally reluctant. He wanted to play lead guitar again,
but agreed to stand in on bass for their
forthcoming demo tape.
On the day they recorded
Chelsea Girl, someone stole
Derek's guitar. Therefore he asked if he could stay on as their bass player.

break-up:
Duncan Barnwell was asked to leave. Although he had a
great attitude, two guitars weren't really needed anymore, and he always looked a mess.
Duncan expected
Derek to leave in sympathy - the two had been school friends, and Duncan had
lured Derek back from Spain with talk of punk and a band called
Johnny And The Self Abusers. But Derek stayed on.
