people stand up again (demo)

background
"There was another one that didn't make it: People Stand Up Again." - Jim - Street Fighting Years book.

One of Simple Minds' best unreleased tracks, People Stand Up Again started off as a lengthy instrumental demo. (It's like an uptempo Saturday Girl with a wonderful guitar solo from Charlie.) It's very much in the style of the Street Fighting Years material, it featured Charlie, Mick, John and Mel.

It was the tenth track of the first reel of the Street Fighting Years library in the Virgin archive.

Unfortunately, the original instrumental demo is not of good quality. There's some volume drops, static and distortion, but the song is complete.

Monitor Mix #1 now includes the lyrics and is a good copy of the entire song. But it's a monitor mix so the levels are slighly out of whack: Jim is too high with the instrumentation rather too soft. The coda also needs a touch more work.

Monitor Mix #2 is logged in the Virgin Archive as Monitor Mix And Bass but both Monitor Mixes feature John so that's an incorrect description. It's a second take which features more instrumentation, ideas and a better ending.

Monitor Mix #3 has a slightly slower tempo and has less going on - it's also missing the final repeat coda where Charlie comes back in on guitar. It's a complete and good recording, but it lacks the sparkle of the previous takes.

Fragment #1 Instrumental is by far the best version; it has the best quality and the arrangement is sublime. However, it's just a tiny part of the entire track as it's been taped over and only a couple of 30 second bursts remain.

lyrics
Monitor Mix #1
All people stand up again,
I don't believe what they've been saying.
If what you see is what you learn,
It's time to push now for all time.
Tell me why, people, oh tell me why.
Give me some truth, give me no alibis.
I don't like what is in their eyes.
But it's not enough just to despise,
In your eyes: people, in your eyes.

If you don't know what you want.
If you don't know where to hide.
Remember the world that's around you.
It's them that reflect all the things that you do.
Remember the world that surrounds you.
History says there's a part you can do.

People in your defense.
Set a fire to this innocence
Get wise to their arrogance.
And education's a key to independence.
Tell me why, tell me why.
There's people outside who should be inside.
They say it's going to be a real rough ride.
Maybe tomorrow sees a turning of the tide.
People, power to your side.

If you don't know where to run,
And if you don't know where to hide,
Remember the love that surrounds you,
It's going to reflect in things that you do.
Remember the world that's around you.
History says there's a place you can view,
Or have I've just got sun in my eyes.
Or maybe I've got dreams in my head.
And maybe I know I've got love by my side.
But then maybe I'm just a fake.

Well, maybe you'll come to me here.
And you'll tell me there's nothing to fear.
And maybe I'll ride us all into view,
As people stand up again.

Come to me here.
And tell me there's nothing to fear.

Tell me there's nothing to fear.
And maybe you'll come to me here.

Tell me there's nothing here.

Maybe there's nothing here.
