background
This was the second instrumental demo on Simple Minds' Old Chapel Tape
which was recorded in January-February 1983 as preparatory work for Sparkle In The Rain.
It wasn't given a name.
The whole song is underpinned by a hard driving bass line with keyboard led two-part
verses and high-tempo choruses. There is no middle-8 and the coda is simply a repeat
of the verse which gradually fades out.
It wasn't developed for Sparkle In The Rain
but was further worked on and developed during the Once Upon A Time
period.
Rough #1 features a new intro and now sounds like an outtake from
Once Upon A Time. An unknown female vocalist scats
a vocal over the first verse and chorus and starts talking over the second verse. The recording then
cuts out.
Rough #2 is simply just the intro repeated and features more embellishments
(particularly from Mick). The guide vocals are now by
the unknown female vocalist and Mick. The track eventually
somes to a faltering end.
Rough #3 is just a slow, hesitant bad start of the intro. Some keyboard appegios cut
in (another of Mick's ideas) and the recording stops.
The driving bassline turned up again later, this time underpinning a late mix of
Kick It In. The idea was only used for this one rough mix.
It hasn't been released in any form.
