people stand up again (demo)

composer
Words and music: Simple Minds

publisher

background
This song had been floating around for years, appearing in different guises during the Sparkle In The Rain and Once Upon A Time periods. The band dusted it down and tried recording it again for Street Fighting Years.

It was demoed at Sarm between March and June 1988 with the band trying different arrangements. Formal recording took place at Loch Earn and several takes were recorded in August 1988 with some subsequent mixing. The song does appear finished but the band were obviously dissatisfied with it and it was not released.

It sounds like an uptempo Saturday Girl with a wonderful guitar solo by Charlie at the end.

It's in the band's library and is reconsidered from time-to-time. For instance, it popped up during the Good News From The Next World sessions as Chorus For The People - a significantly rearranged version where only the chorus remained - so it definitely has potential.

lyrics
All people stand up again,
I don't believe what they've been saying,
If what you see is what you learn,
It's time to push now for all time.
Tell me why, people, oh tell me why.
Give me some truth, give me no alibis.
I don't like what is in their eyes.
But it's not enough just to despise,
In your eyes - people, in your eyes.

If you don't know what you want.
If you don't know where to hide.
Remember the world that's around you.
It's them that reflect all the things that you do.
Remember the world that surrounds you.
History says there's a part you can do.

People in your defense.
Set a fire to their innocence
Get wise to their arrogance.
And education's a key to their ???
Tell me why, oh people, tell me why.
There's people outside who should be inside.
They say it's going to be a real rough ride.
Maybe tomorrow sees a turning of the tide.
People, power to your side.

If you don't know where to run,
And if you don't know where to hide,
Remember the love that surrounds you,
It's going to reflect in things that you do.
Remember the world that's around you.
History says there's a place you can view,
And I've just got sun in my eyes.
And maybe I've got dreams in my head.
And maybe I know I've got love by my side.
But then maybe I'm just a fake.

Maybe you'll come to me here.
And you'll tell me there's nothing to fear.
And maybe I'll ride a slow ??? down to you,
As people stand up again.

Come to me here.
And tell me there's nothing to fear.

Tell me there's nothing to fear.
And maybe you'll come to me here.

Tell me there's nothing here.

Maybe there's nothing here.
