background
The song was first composed during the Wisseloord Sessions of November-December 1989. By the end of the sessions it was formally recorded (on the 11th December 1989) and committed to a compilation tape of potential ideas.

All the elements of the final song were present in the demo itself. It has slight 'country' feel due to Charlie's slide guitar and the keyboard settings (completely unlike the eventual sound of the Real Life version).

Unlike most of the ideas floating around at the time, the song had its final title and some working lyrics.

lyrics
The summer's gone winter's in your eyes,
I can feel the thunder storms inside.
I walk to the middle with the cold wind in front of me.
And all I see is the ghost of what could be.

If you can see the lights, shine on front of me.
If you can see the lights, shine on from where you'll see.
Love has came, the hardest one of all.
I walk to the middle, love's is on your own.

I'm broken too, I stare in front of space.
And I called you up but there's nothing in your gaze.
I walk to the middle of where I want to be.
And all I see is the next space in front of me.

If you can see the lights, shine on where you go.
If you can see the lights, shout out where you go.
Love has came, where you gonna be?
Walk to the ??? in front of me.

The rain is falling down upon my face.
I still walk the streets, and look into your face.
I've got my heart of stone, I hope you're satisfied.
Look into the long, long gaze of eyes.

If you can see the lights, shine on front of me.
If you can see the lights, don't ???
Summer's gone and I can't tell you lies.
If you can see the lights, shine on in front of your eyes.

If you can see the lights.
