good night

composer
Written by: Kerr / Burchill

background
Goodnight was recorded during the Real Life sessions. However, producer Steve Lipson didn't consider it strong enough for the album, so it was relegated to the B-side of the Let There Be Love single.

With the benefit of hindsight this is now viewed as a mistake and Goodnight is considered one of the band's strongest B-sides.

lyrics
The lyrics have never been published: a transcription follows

So long - I'll see you there,
Mother talks and Daddy speaks,
Drifting like the ship that's far away,
Go gentle in the goodnight when you go.
Gentle in the goodnight when you go.

Your love takes me higher,
Knocks me off my feet,
And like a child I cry.
And off along the street and so alone,
Go gentle in the goodnight when you go.
Gentle in the goodnight when you go.
Oh, don't pass me by.

Your love is the greatest kind,
It solves the mysteries that echo in my mind.
And I'm standing with the angels in my eyes,
Stay with me in the goodnight one more time.

Stay with me in the goodnight one more time.

And I've been waiting for the day when you come my way,
And the whole world turns tonight.
And I'll be standing in a line,
For some time like a walking beggar in the night,
Go gentle - Go gentle in the goodnight when you go.

Oh, when you go.
