footsteps (demo)

composers
Written by: Kerr / Burchill / MacNeil

background
Footsteps was one of the demo versions of I Wish You Were Here and first appeared on Jams #2 which was recorded at Barwell Court in January-March 1985. It had been demoed for Sparkle In The Rain as Old Chapel Song #6, and as Raggae during the initial sessions for Once Upon A Time but was later given the title Footsteps. This was mentioned by Jim in an interview during the recordings:

"One of our new songs, Footsteps, [is] a kind of lament for a lost friend. But death doesn’t worry me; it’s silly to ignore those things, I think acceptance is the only sensible attitude."

It was the first recorded song in the various jamming tapes to be given vocals. The vocals were double-tracked with Jim singing the lead and backing vocals. The lyrics were almost the same as the final album take.

The first rough recording was very close to the final album take but featured extra repeats, breaks and ideas. This would all be trimmed down when the album was eventually recorded.

I Wish You Were Here

lyrics
Footsteps.

Footsteps.
I can hear footsteps in the hall.
Footsteps.
Seems like I've been through this before.
Some time has come now,
Some time has passed,
Some things still look the same.
Is heaven all above,
And paradise below?
Will the questions still remain.

Can we see you?
Are we near you?
How could you disappear out of here?
I wish for something - I wish you were here.

Footsteps.
I can hear footsteps in the hall.
Footsteps,
It seems like I've been through this before.
We loved you then,
I guess we always will,
We love you still from here.
Birds of a feather always stay together,
And never separate,
No fear.

Footsteps.
I can hear footsteps in the hall.
Footsteps,
Seems like I've been through this before.
If all the world was turning blue and gold,
Like through your eyes so clear,
The time has come to celebrate our past,
And crystallize this sphere.

Can we see you?
Are we near you?
How can you disappear out of here?
I wish for something.
Can we see you?
Are we near you?
How can you disappear out of here?
I wish for something.

There will come a day.
Oh some day our day will come.
Our day will come, our day will come.
