background
Written after the Real Life album, Space was one of the centrepieces of Our Secrets Are The Same,
gaining enough attention to be selected as a potential single by Chrysalis in 1999/2000.
It was remixed by Gary Wilkinson in March 2000 for a proposed single. The single was eventually cancelled when
the album was withdrawn from release. Johnson Somerset, who'd produced one of the best remixes of the
previous single War Babies, was also commissioned to produce some dance reworkings.
It was unofficially premiered by Jordi Tarda on the 21st October 2000 when he leaked the album on his
radio show.
- A sentimental ballad along the lines of Let There Be Love and War Babies, the central
chorus was wrapped around the well-known poem:
- Star light, star bright,
- First star I see tonight,
- I wish I may, I wish I might,
- Have a wish, I wish tonight.
The song was officially unveiled on The Floating World tour, the first from Our Secrets Are The Same to be played
live.
"Space being the metaphor for emotional alienation. Walking the same streets physically, yet often spiritually
we live on different planets. A universe between us, yet I feel myself still calling out over the music and
through the distance." - Jim, Silver Box.
The studio version was finally released as part of the Silver Box retrospective.
Gary Wilkinson's single mix was finally issued as part of the Greatest Hits + package in 2013,
the same year that Johnson Somerset unveiled his Moscow Mix on his YouTube channel.
Despite it's relative obscurity, the song became a live favourite, and was featured during the band's
Celebrate: Greatest Hits + tour. After the tour's conclusion, the band
returned to the recording studio and re-recorded a "band" version of the song.

The lyrics have never been published: a transcription follows
I'll hurt you if you say I did,
Take you down and your all alone.
Imagination wears you out,
Crying brings you down again.
The dream is over,
The feeling's gone,
If we were something you were dreaming all along.
Star light,
Star bright,
I'm the star you see at night.
And I wish I may,
I wish I might,
Be in your dreams tonight.
Does anybody cut you?
Does anybody let you down?
You're praying for someone soon,
To lie beside you now.
Star light,
Star bright,
I'm the star you see at night.
And I wish I may,
I wish I might,
Be in your dreams tonight.
Star light,
Star bright.
You were saying where you'd take me,
And that's where I'll be found,
But you were sleeping talking dreaming,
Whisper take me now... Yeah star bright.
Star light,
Star bright,
I'm the star you see at night.
And I wish I may,
I wish I might,
Be in your dreams...
The dream is over,
Party's over.
I'm still waiting,
Nothing's falling.
No confusion,
No suspicion,
If you're talking,
I will listen.
Star light,
Star bright,
Be in your dreams tonight.
