background
The two early mixes (which can be found on a mis-dated Rough Reel)
are completely different to final song. The tempo is slowed, the complex drum patterns are missing, the whole song
is underpinned by an arpeggio synth and slow guitar chords,
and the rough vocal is just a repeat of the phrase "In Every Heaven." This was a very early version of
the song, probably dating from early 1982, and I suspect was recorded at Rockfield.
The Monitor Mix #1 recording, which was committed to tape on the 18th May 1982, is
extremely bass and drum heavy. This instrumental version doesn't differ much from the album
outtake except for a count in and extended outro. The keyboards and guitars are strangely
mixed and sometimes come to the front of the mix. The arrangement of the keyboards and
guitars differ slightly from the final recorded version. It fades out extremely quickly.
The second Monitor Mix #2 recorded is much better mixed. This instrumental version
differs more from the album outtake and includes a count in and extended outro. There are different
riffs and experiments from both Charlie and
Mick.
Unfortunately there's also little bit of tape chew.
Rough Mix #1 is from two weeks later. The recording is still extremely bass and
drum heavy. This instrumental version doesn't differ much from the album
outtake except for a count in, extended outro and Charlie plays some
different riffs.
