background
Someone was one of their poppier songs, composed during the latter half of 1978 and premiered during their 1978 gigs.

It was recorded for the band's third demo tape. This version featured a different synth melody by Mick, which can be heard on live bootlegs from 1978, and which was changed when the song was formally recorded for Life In A Day. The demo version remains unreleased.

It was one of the first songs committed to multi-track tape during the first Life In A Day LP sessions at Farmyard Studios in late January 1979. The first take had a slightly slower tempo and was abandoned as an unfinished instrumental. The second take, recorded during the same sessions, was faster and eventually became the master.

An early rough mix was prepared by John Leckie between the 19th and 23rd February 1979. This version was missing the Is there someone? Someone? backing vocals and ends with an unexpected synth flourish from Mick MacNeil, but was otherwise the same as the final album version. Final mixes (including some very similar out-takes) were committed to tape on the 28th February 1979.

It opened their debut LP. Of all the songs on Life In A Day, this recording of Someone was representative of their live sound at the time - the band being disheartened with the rest of the album.

It was also selected as the B-side for the German edition of Life In A Day and pressed into service for their UK tour of 1979. Since then, it was totally forgotten until being dramatically resurrected for Lostboy! AKA's first tour.

lyrics
Ruby says she does not dream,
She says she's seen it all before,
Outside the night is cold and wet,
Don't know if we can take much more.
Is there someone?
Someone?

She says:
Someone is calling,
Someone is calling for me.
She says:
I got some feelings so different,
No one else can see,
She says,
She says.

Streets are empty every day,
No longer can you see the sun,
You're running home before the morning light,
There is a new age that has just begun.

Is there someone?
Someone?

She says:
Someone is calling,
Someone is calling for me.
She says:
I got some feelings so distant,
No one else can see.
She says,
She says.
