like the star you think you are

background
Like The Star You Think You Are was one of the first songs demoed for the 'reboot' of Simple Minds in January 2001.

Two rough, and sparse, versions exist of this slow melancholy number. An "acoustic" version with Jim, acoustic guitar, bass and drum machine; and an electronic version which replaces the acoustic guitar with synthesizers.

Perhaps because of its slow tempo, it was dropped in favour of the more 'upbeat' numbers which ended up on Cry.

It has not been released or re-recorded.

lyrics
The lyrics have never been published: a transcription follows

Like the star you think you are, on your own but never lonely.
Your halo's getting dark, although you keep your distance from me.
Like the star you think you are, you were better than any other.
And you slide back in your car, you've got no idea it's over.

If you wait, you'll see, that you're not so far from me.
And I'd hate to be so paralysed with fear.
Holding back the tears - oh, so insincere.

Like the star you think you are, on your own but never lonely.
There's something about your pain, that makes you think you own me.
Like the star you think you are, out of reach and out of reason.
And your heart is getting hard, because life is losing meaning.

If you wait, you'll see, that you're not so far from me.
And I'd hate to be so paralysed with fear.
Holding back the tears - oh, so insincere.

If you wait, you'll see, that you're not so far from here.
And I'd hate to be so paralysed with fear.
Holding back the tears - it's all so insincere.
