a life shot in black and white

composers
Lyrics: Kerr
Music: Coad / Burchill

background
This song was demoed for Black And White 050505 where its original title was A Life Shot In Black And White. For the subsequent album promos, the title was shortened to Black And White, but it regained its full title for the album.

"Finally in the week that Holocaust survivors and many of the world leaders take part in a ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, here in Italy, a country that I love and almost live, a leading newspaper poll found that 12% of Italians doubted that the Holocaust even happened! I am lost for words regarding that as a fact. How can this be etc, or where does anyone begin to put this right. Well never entirely trusting newspaper polls, I started with my own kin and therefore during Saturdays tube ride to watch a dull Arsenal team play pitiful Wolverhampton Wanderers in north London, I asked my twelve year old if he had seen any of the Auschwitz/Holocaust memorial on television. “What is the Holocaust?”, he replied. Only one response to that really and as a result we will make a future visit to Poland where he will discover at first hand the true story of genocide as something he will surely never forget and as something I could never forget. Check “A Life Shot In Black and White” a song from our up and coming album for more personal thoughts on this subject and why of course for the sake of humanity it must never be forgotten. " - Jim

"Overwhelming within its piano emotion. This could be classic Simple Minds as it recalls former days and yet it still dares to suggest that it from a creative space that is as fresh as the morning" - Jim

lyrics
A life shot in black and white,
Lays me down,
Takes to me where,
Words still fail me, yes!
A life shot in black and white,
Shames me now, as takes us there,
Where nothing can break this.

I'm still toiling back,
And yet I'm still ashen,
I keep falling back,
On what I believe still matters.
I’m slamming on the brakes,
And like a haunted child,
I was born to break.

A life shot in black and white,
Throws me down, then raises me,
With colours still bleeding... yes.
It’s all there in black and white,
I’ve seen it now, I've seen it there,
And the moment's not leaving.

A life shot in black and white,
Stares me down, take me where,
And like doves we won't leave never.
We’re still here in black and white,
Changes now, changes here,
But the spirit's not leaving.
