Ian Cranna was finishing his PhD at Edinburgh University in history in the late seventies, whilst also penning reviews
for the NME. His
superlactive review of Simple Minds in October 1978 gained the band their
first column inches in a national publication, but created an expectation that the band felt they couldn’t live
up to.
He became one of the band’s mentors, advising them, and getting them gigs around the Edinburgh area. It
looked like he would eventually become the band’s manager, but
Bruce eventually got the job.
Ian still writes and currently contributes to Q Magazine.
