additional information
Simple Minds’ first 12", I Travel,
was issued by Arista Records in September 1980. It combined a propulsive extended remix of the
driving title track with the previously unreleased
Kaleidoscope and the album track
Film Theme.
Their second 12" featured a lengthy ominous take of
Celebrate with the flip side devoted to a non-stop mix of
Changeling and
I Travel.
Arista's third, and final 12", promoted the compilation album
Celebration, a showcase of the band's best tracks whilst they were signed
to the label. I Travel appeared again, this time backed with two exclusive
live recordings of Thirty Frames A Second and
I Travel.
When Virgin purchased the back catalogue from Arista after the success of
New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) they reissued all the band's albums
recorded for the label and made plans to repress all the 12" singles. However, only
I Travel reappeared, packaged in a smart new sleeve, and backed by the lone
Film Theme.
This paltry gesture was repeated when Virgin compiled the Themes Volumes. They chose to ignore the
Arista releases, plumping to start the series with their own reissue of the 12". As a bonus track, they took
Celebrate, but missed a golden opportunity by selecting the shorter album version
over the extended mix.
So whilst this Theme marked the CD debut of I Travel in its extended glory,
the extended mix of Celebrate and the live cuts of
Thirty Frames A Second and
I Travel were cruelly ignored. And whilst the Theme sleeve notes
suggested the ultra rare Film Theme Dub might be appearing on CD for the first time,
the album version of the instrumental was used instead.
