The band was now clear of the lowlands of Europe and travelling around France, Germany and Italy.
The songs had settled and Simple Minds were comfortable and confident with the new arrangements.
But that didn’t mean the night of the 14th March 1983 was not without incident. Jim
started a verbal fight with a couple of "wankers" in the crowd whilst New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)
was cut off in its prime by a power cut.
Therefore Form Phallus Function captured both the majority of the concert (the encores of Love Song and
Sweat In Bullet weren’t included) and a feisty Simple Minds who weren’t going
to ignore any trouble.
This power cut was committed to CD in its entirety. After the groans of the disappointed crowd faded, Mel
could be heard resolutely continuing and pounding out the backing. As power was restored, the rest of the band joined in and simply
continued the song where it was so abruptly interrupted.
This package returns to the impenetrable art and bizarre titles so beloved by bootleggers. But it’s an excellent audience recording
(far superior to the easily disposable In Italia) with the band coming through loud, clear and not marred by
too much crowd chatter. Unfortunately Form Phallus Function is a rare bootleg but if you see a copy then definitely grab it.
