background
"Within the remit Lostboy! AKA needed to prove that he could design excellent pop tracks done in his own way.
Jez Coad’s “spaghetti western” guitars light up the backdrop as the vocal beckons
you to release whatever you may be tired of hiding, whatever you are holding back." - Jim
"I recall playing the Shadowland demo to Andy Gillespie on tour with Simple Minds last year,
and he loved it instantly. Definitely the most Mindish of all the Lostboy! AKA songs, due to Mel Gaynor's
trademarks. Why the single? No easy choice with many contenders but all things considered the promotions
team felt that in most countries it would be the best opening for radio with other tracks then to follow." - Jim.
In the song Shadowland you sing: Come back out of the shadow – is that somehow talking to yourself and encouraging yourself?
I think that’s true. I think it’s me talking to the... also leading on from talking to this character I left behind, [which has] come back. And me
saying I’m not afraid to show it. I’m not afraid to show that I want to be naïve again or spontaneous or as you said earlier, the obvious
thing that this could be a risk. Yes! But no in my mind, no! I’m doing it! I’m not thinking about "Are the traffic lights red or green?" So,
I think I am talking to a bit of a psyche.
Jim, Lostboy! Generic Interview
Despite being the first single, Shadowland was the second track to be heard from the
Lostboy! album (the first being Refugee). It was premiered by
Billy Sloan on his Sunday night radio show on the 14th March and then appeared
on the Lostboy! AKA YouTube Channel the next day along with the single
mix.
Chris Evans played the song on his Radio Two show on the 30th March.
The single remix was prepared by Cenzo Townshend who'd previously mixed Rockets
and Stars Will Lead The Way into radio friendly forms.
The lyrics in the album booklet were slightly different to the final edit. They include half a verse which was omitted from the mix:
Some play the wild card, some play the game,
Once you've surrendered there's no turning back again.
Daydreams of silver, sunsets are gold.
Now is the hour your story can be told.
Simon Hayward produced an electromix of the track for Edel before the
ElectroSet Tour. It has yet to be released.

Out in the back woods, out from the main,
Once you've been there is no turning back again.
Wrapped up in silver, dressed up in gold,
Now is the time that your story can be told.
Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, give me words I should know.
Some play the wild card, some play the game,
Once you've surrendered there's no turning back again.
Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, give me words I should know.
Turn to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, tell me words I should know.
Don't send it all away, such a special day.
On your special day.
Come to me walk out of the shadows,
Whisper to me, tell me words I should know.
Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, tell me words I should know.
Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Whipser to me, tell me words I should know.
Sing to me tell me words I should know.
On your special day,
Such a special day.
